CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF A.I.D.A

img_2014.jpg

During the school holidays, our dancers packed their suitcases and headed off to South Australia for the Australian Irish Dancing Championships held at Adelaide Showground. This year in particular was very memorable as we were celebrating 50 years of the Australian Irish Dancing Association and our very own Miss Jan being a founding member.

The week began with the opening ceremony which involved each state performing a piece relevant to each decade of the 50 years of AIDA. Two students from every dance school in NSW took part in the recreation of the dance drama ‘Molly” which was created by Miss Jan in the 80’s and won the dance drama section at a national level which no longer exists in Australia. Both Genevieve and Alannah participated in the item and did extremely well after many weeks of rehearsals.

Congratulations to Thomas who was our only national solo dancer this year who has overcome injury to receive 5th place in the Senior Boys 16 years.

After lots of dedication, time and practice our 4 pairs of sisters were ready to compete in the U18 four hand, Open 4 hand, Open 8 hand, Own choreography 4 hand and the Senior figure. They danced wonderfully and should be very proud of themselves and each-other. A very big thank you to the parents who have given up so much of their time to drive their children to dance class and competitions during this very busy time of the year.

A massive thank you to our wonderful Miss Jan who has helped all of our students be the dancers they are today. With her guidance and support our dancers are able to experience great opportunities like this and make memories that will last a lifetime. IMG_2045IMG_2046

It has been five years since the dance family was last in Adelaide for nationals, so we decided to recreate some photos from 2012!

The week concluded with the Ceili which always involves everyone celebrating the end of another nationals by getting up on the dance floor and dancing the night away! All parents, dancers and teachers had a fantastic night and made many wonderful memories with our friends and family which will last a lifetime.

2017 NSW STATE CEILI

2017nswceilichampionships_0646After many weeks of hard work and commitment, our dancers competed at the State Ceili Championships at Rooty Hill RSL. Although it has been a tough year so far with injury and sickness, the Currie- Henderson dancers seemed to come out on top with a very successful day. The day started off with our youngest team, the under 12 three hand, which resulted in a fantastic 2nd place. Well done to Scarlett, Lucas and Katalina!!

The day then continued on with our dancers involved in the Under15, Under18 and open sections. First off was the Under15 Girls 4hand, who managed to receive a recall and got 7th place which is fantastic achievement considering it was such a tough section. Congratulations Genevieve, Annalise, Alannah and Danijela!! Also competing in the same age group was Ailish and Frances who joined the other girls in a 6 hand, which placed 3rd! Additionally there were two 2hands, placing 6th and 2nd which is an excellent result. Fantastic effort girls!

In the afternoon, our senior dancers took to the stage. Both the girls and mixed open 4 hands, received recalls and placed 6th and 4th respectively. In addition to this, the open mixed received 3rd place and so did the open girls own choreography. These dancers have been working extremely hard to try and perfect their dances and technique and they should be very proud of their efforts and dedication.

The last section of the day wads the Senior figure dance. All the Currie- Henderson dancers ranging from 11-23 were involved in this dance and achieved 1st place!! This was a wonderful way to finish off the day. Everybody danced to the best of their ability and should be extremely proud of their efforts. Also, big thank you to their parents who are constantly showing their support for the dance studio and its members.

It was a fun-filled weekend for all last week, with our dancers performing at many different locations across Sydney to celebrate St Patricks Day 2017. Our senior dancers woke up early and made their way to the Mercantile hotel, where they showcased their talent for many hotel guests and were privileged to be filmed by  Channel 7 and photographed by The Sydney Morning Herald. They then made their way to the annual Lansdowne Lunch which was held at the Convention Centre in Darling Harbour to perform for over 1500 guests. Our other dancers performed at South Sydney leagues club, Jacksons on George and St Annes Nursing Home, Hunters Hill just to name a few. Needless to say all dancers, parents and teachers had a wonderful weekend and the countdown has begun for St Patricks Day 2018!

Frances and Laura can now call themselves State Champions, after they took out the U/16 Girls 2-Hand against stiff competition. In May 2014, three of our senior dancers made their debut at the 2014 AIDA NSW Debutante Ball. Meg, Evangeline and Michelle were the picture of elegance as they were presented to the Patron of the Australian Irish Dancing Association, our very own Miss Jan. Jack was as charming as ever as he suited up to partner one of the girls.

A number of our Currie-Henderson pupils also performed at the ball – a pleasure to watch as always!
